Speak to your GP
If you feel out of control emotionally, or are worried that you may have a mental health problem, speaking to your GP can be a good first step.
GPs can provide support through face-to-face, video and telephone consultations.
Your doctor can:
- Talk with you about your problems
- Check whether your symptoms may have a physical cause
- Discuss medicine for depression, anxiety or other conditions where appropriate
- Refer you to a suitable service
If you are worried that your doctor may be too busy to talk through your problems, you can ask the receptionist about booking a longer appointment. You could also write things down and share them with your doctor.
Active Monitoring
Some GP surgeries offer referral to a service called Active Monitoring.
This service can help with issues such as anger management, depression or anxiety. It is usually weekly for 5 or 6 weeks and aims to give you tools to manage your own mental health, especially if certain feelings or worries keep coming back.
